Mercury Detoxification

The following information is based on opinions of Dr. Boyd Haley, Professor and Chair of Chemistry of the University of Kentucky. He is one of the foremost authorities on mercury toxicity and the science behind it. Mercury is increasingly being questioned as a neurotoxin in our environment. Dr. Haley reports that the removal of mercury is best done with reducing equivalents. These are natural compounds used by the body to remove mercury or protect the tissues from its toxic effects.

Vitamin C is perhaps the best example. It crosses the blood-brain barrier. Vitamin C “reduces” mercury: it binds less tightly to cellular membranes, allowing for natural removal of mercury. It also gets inside the cell. Intravenous and high-dose oral Vitamin C is key to mercury removal and can get to places common chelates DMPS and DMSA can’t.

Alpha Lipoic Acid and Glutathione have both been scientifically shown to help remove mercury from the cells of the body. Alpha Lipoic Acid activates the enzymes that help to remove mercury, and Glutathione helps carry mercury out in the bile. These supplements can be given after Vitamin C.

After age 40 our production of Melatonin decreases. Melatonin 1-3 mg a day helps protect neural and brain cells from heavy metal toxicity. This may be a good supplement to use during detoxification.

Methyl B12 has been shown to be low in patients with mercury toxicity and in children with autism. Adding Methyl B-12 orally can benefit such patients. Intramuscular injection and intravenous infusion can enhance this effect. It is commonly known that Selenium bonds with mercury and may help to remove it. However, Selenium’s ability to bind with mercury is reduced when used in conjunction with Alpha Lipoic Acid and Glutathione. A helpful approach may be to separate these substances when used in a detoxification protocol.

Amino acids, especially cysteine and methianine, may help to facilitate mercury removal across the blood-brain barrier and to increase Glutathione synthesis in the body. Amino acids are very safe and have no known down side. I like a product called UltraClear Plus by Metagenics that strongly supplements this process.

Another aid to mercury detoxification is NDF. NDF, a rare colloidal suspension of chlorella, effectively binds mercury and pulls it out of the body. NDF with or after use of chelators like EDTA, DMPS and DMSA have been shown to remove large amounts of mercury.

In my opinion it is beneficial to review your exposure to mercury through dental fillings with a knowledgeable dentist. A mercury challenge test costs about $75.00 and can let you know more detail about your exposure. It is also helpful to evaluate your exposure and discuss an individualized detoxification plan with a knowledgeable physician.
