ACAM Updates, Chelaton Therapy Research and Protocols

ACAM Updates

Dr. Johnson and Dr. Pretila recently returned from the American College for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM) meetings in Arizona. ACAM is the certifying board for Chelation Therapy and is one of the leading organizations concerning intravenous and orthomolecular vitamin and nutrient therapies. Dr. Wolverton has attended these meetings for many years in the past as well.

21st Century Medicine is happy to report that Dr. Johnson passed his boards in Chelation Therapy and received certification during this seminar, adding Chelation Therapy to his training in various other I.V. therapies.

All three doctors have reviewed important updates from the ACAM meeting, and are in incorporating several improvements into our intravenous Chelation and Vitamin Therapy programs. We believe these changes will make I.V.’s you receive in our office even more effective.

Research on Chelation Therapy

Research is clearly showing that EDTA Chelation Therapy reduces constriction in cardiac vessels and improves blood flow. After initial intensive treatments of Chelation Therapy, maintenance I.V.’s every four to six weeks generally maintain beneficial effects for stable, non-acute patients. More acute patients require more intensive therapy under the supervision of your doctor. In carotid and iliac vessels, cholesterol plaque reductions are seen on CT scans after Chelation Therapy treatments. In the heart, plaque reductions are not frequently seen, although blood flow and reduced coronary spasms and myocardial infarctions (heart attacks) are consistently reduced and prevented. Increased plaqing is rarely seen in patients following Chelation Therapy and diet protocols. Studies are showing that Chelation Therapy effectively reduces oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol and prevents cardiac and vessel disease. Chelation Therapy helps reduce nitric oxide, and long-term use can reduce blood pressure and the effects of central nervous system stress.

Improvements to Our Chelation Protocols

If you are receiving Chelation Therapy, we strongly recommend that you take the following supplements to assist you with your nutrient and detoxification support. We believe these supplements will significantly enhance the effects of Chelation Therapy, especially in long-term treatment.

1. A multi-vitamin with trace minerals, such as Ultra Preventative X or VitaSpectrum.

2. Vitamin C, 1-2 grams minimum daily.

3. An anti-oxidant, such as AntiOx Cysteine Free, 2 tablets 3-5 times a week.

4. Fish oil, such as Omega-EFA or EPA-DHA, 2 grams daily.

5. B Complex, as recommended by your doctor.

We also recommend that you take the following optional supplements.

1. Glutathione cream, 1 ml 3 times a week.

2. A lipid control agent such as LipiControl.

3. Triplichol (Omega 3’s, soy isoflavones, slow release Niacin and Pantenine

4. A slow release Niacin such as Time Release Niacin.

5. Zinc 25 mg, if recommended by your doctor.

Any of our doctors may make modifications to this list in order to make them specific to your case. Please consult your doctor about the use of these supplements the next time you discuss Chelation Therapy.

Since kidney problems with Chelation Therapy are very rare, it is now recommended that blood draws to check kidney function be reduced to every sixth treatment rather than every third.

We have found that many reactions to Chelation Therapy are often due to sensitivities to the Vitamin B Complex in the I.V. We use preservative free Vitamin B Complex, but for patients who have had some reaction to Chelation Therapy, we can reduce or eliminate the B vitamins in your I.V altogether.

We have also improved our I.V. technique, frequently using angiocath needles to reduce infiltrations and leaks during I.V therapy.

We are happy to share these updates with you, and hope they will benefit many of you in the weeks and months to come.
