Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Vitamin C, What's New At 21stCM

Eye Disease and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

A recent study suggests that Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may help reduce the incidence of macular degeneration, which is a common cause of blindness. In a study published in the Archives of Opthamology, a 40% lower incidence was found over five years in 3,600 older adults who consumed fish at least once a week. Those who ate fish at least three times a week had an even lower risk of macular degeneration. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are also shown to lower the incidence of heart attacks and are probably one of the most important substances to make sure you get in a healthy diet. For many people supplementation with a good fish oil is worth considering. Many brands are not of optimal quality, so consult your doctor about how you choose this product.

A New Look at Vitamin C

As you know, the doctors in our office recommend Vitamin C both orally and in intravenous infusions for immune and antioxidant support. There has been much information on the news lately supporting the use of Vitamin C. One key point is that doses of 1,000 mg and higher are probably more effective than lower doses.

Recent studies suggest that Vitamin C lowers the risk of coronary heart disease. Taking Vitamin C was proved as important as factors like not smoking, having low blood pressure and maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. In a ten-year study at UCLA, men who took 800 mg of Vitamin C lived an average of six years longer than those taking 60 mg of Vitamin C. Women also significantly benefited. Vitamin C also helped people to recover from heart attacks more successfully.

Other studies also suggest larger doses of Vitamin C (as in intravenous infusions) may lengthen cancer survival times. Consuming higher doses of Vitamin C may help prevent some cancers and other chronic diseases. We recommend doses of 1,000 mg to 4,000 mg of Vitamin C daily. Talk to your doctor about what is best for you, as there are some medical considerations with some illnesses and medicines.

What's New at 21st Century Medicine

In our relationship with Uriel Pharmacy, we now carry pharmaceutical grade, low dose progesterone cream. This cream is the kind of dose typically found in the health food store and has been compounded for us to offer a high standard cream. We now also carry gluthatione gel for topical use. This is one of the best antioxidants for the liver and for patients who are detoxing or chelating.

With the Accutron Mentor we have purchased, we will be able to access meridian function on acupuncture points. This form of testing helps us to better diagnose imbalances in the body and recommend more effective treatments. The Accutron also allows us to treat many imbalances and is an excellent treatment for chronic pain and also for fibromyalgia, when accompanied by the use of ultrasound. This is an exciting addition to our office for our patients.
