WHAT'S WRONG WITH SUGAR

By Dr. Steven M. Johnson, D.O.

Since 1821, Americans have increased sugar intake from 10 pounds per person to 170 pounds per person per year!

Consumption of refined sugar depletes the body’s precious reserves.

Sugar, especially fructose, has been shown in numerous animal experiments to shorten life.

Excessive use of sugar has been linked to many problems:  elevated triglycerides and cholesterol, increased adhesiveness of blood platelets, increase in blood insulin levels and corticosteroid levels, increase in gastric and blood acidity, enlargement of the liver, hypertrophy of the adrenals, and shrinkage of the pancreas.

Numerous studies have positively connected sugar intake to heart disease.

Sugar consumption is associated with hyperactivity, behavior problems, lack of concentration, and violent tendencies.

Medical journals in the 1970s demonstrated a connection between sugar intake and increased desire for coffee and tobacco.

Skin conditions are aggravated by high sugar intakes.

Sugar encourages the overgrowth of candida albicans.

Sugar consumption is positively associated with cancer in humans and test animals.

Sugar depresses immune function by reducing the ability of white blood cells to destroy foreign particles and microorganisms by 50% for over five hours after ingestion.

Sugar causes bone loss and dental decay by causing phosphorous levels to drop and calcium levels to rise, as it is pulled from the teeth and bones. The drop in phosphorous inhibits the absorption of this calcium, making it unusable and toxic.
